  the jehovah’s witnesses settled a lawsuit this week brought by a pennsylvania woman who says the religion’s leaders covered up sexual abuse she suffered as a teenager.. the settlement came five days into a trial in which stephanie fessler, a former jehovah’s witness, claimed the religion’s parent corporation violated pennsylvania’s child abuse reporting laws by instructing local leaders – known as elders – not to report her allegations to police.. according to fessler, a middle-aged jehovah’s witness woman, terry monheim, began sexually abusing her when she was 14. at 15, fessler disclosed the abuse to her parents.

  defendant did not waive the clergy-penitent privilege by having his wife present during the alleged confession;

  The relationship between husband and wife should not be compared to the relationship between elders and the legal department, who are appraised of the sins of a member.

  The clergy penitent privilege should be denied in any case where the information moves outside of the sinner and the cleric (one person), and especially when an investigation is conducted and punitive measures are taken within the church. Religions/religious leaders should keep the scope of their actions limited to the spiritual realm. That's their domain. The physical world is the jurisdiction of secular authorities

  I feel like I'm losing my religion/faith

  i'm a baptized jw...been baptized for 8 years...and throughout the years i've been baptized i see "hypocrisy" so to speak in the religion...when you're new and not baptized that's when the jws want to invite you to every gathering they have, they want to appear like they're your best friend...they want to help you out when needed and so forth...however, once you're baptized you go to the elders for help they don't help you....all they do is gather you around the office...have bibles in hand and so forth...they give you articles as well, instead of physically helping you out....but yet when you weren't baptized they would physically help you out and not throw scriptures and articles in your face.

  also when you ask for help and so forth with the bros/sisters they want to throw the "each one must carry his/her own load" scripture at you.....but yet what happened to the scripture of taking care of widows and people who are orphans?.

  it's not just one congregation...throughout the 8 years i've been baptized i've been through many kingdom halls...many towns...many states...when i was inactive for awhile i even pretended to not be baptized and just play dumb when the witnesses came to my door...they're much nicer to you when you're not baptized then when you are baptized...why is that?.

  What you say is very true of JW's, and other people too. I am however intrigued as to why you seem to go for physical help. Members of a group may be leery of newly interested people when they take for granted the expectation of physical help from the group.

  JW's my not want to do much for you, but why would you expect others to do something for you? You may have very real needs, but understand that people grow wary if the expectation of help is taken for granted. I would.
  

  JW's are quite similar to other groups. Some are naturally generous and compassionate, but others are selfish and unwilling to help. You may be calling the wrong people.

  The parents??, really. Are we supposed to assume that if the same parents were atheists, they would keep their mouth shut. C'mon. You know better than that. Cult's leaders control every aspect of the members' lives. The parents in a cult are not free to use common sense, even self preserving actions. They do as leaders want them to do. The WT wants to protect money over children, which means they have an institutional policy of child sexual abuse cover-up veiled as clergy penitent privilege.

  Since it is axiomatic that it is US law that protects child abuse communications in a c/p setting, that allegation is a blatant lie

  clergy penitent privilege, really? JW's don't earn or deserve that privilege because they create their own courts where the confession is known to multiple persons.

  in december, i lunched with someone who was at one time quite close and is still a jw.

  the topic of the arc ( australian royal commission ) and pedophilia came up.

  the two things that was immediately voiced by this person was the two witness rule and that it was homosexuals molesting witness boys parroting the plastic faced stephen lett.this person is not online and has not seen the arc videos or know anything about the silent lambs movement.

  Knowing what we know of Watchtower's procedures, elders involved in child abuse cases can't enjoy c/p privilege. Too many are people involved in the " private confession": three elders, the legal department, the victim. They are screwed. I am glad!

  what activities that Jehovah's Witness does that aren't regulated by the Watchtower. All of their movements (and thoughts) outside of WT approved activities are monitored and disciplined. If that was the case that the WT has no control over things that a JW does outside of KH activities, etc, then the WT has no business disfellowshipping people for taking blood or lighting up a cigarette

  Yes Orphan Crow, that's the main problem with cults that Richard so eagerly wants to defend. They control the minds and every aspect of the life of their members, and then, when legal responsibility needs to be assessed, they argue to be an entirely separate party and have nothing to do with the problems of their members.

  i'm a 4th generation jw.

  i started to realize it wasn't the truth over 2 years ago in late october/early november 2014. i don't know how exactly it happened.

  i remember i had just heard about confirmation bias, and it hit me: i realized that i would be guilty of confirmation bias if i didn't look at the other side.
